Brief Summary of Job Duties:
Under the general direction of a Police Lieutenant, the incumbent provides direct supervision of one or more teams of police officers or other assigned personnel. Independently prioritizes and completes ongoing tasks following departmental guidelines and policies and referring to established state law. Performs administrative duties such as scheduling, disseminating policies, performance evaluations, recommending disciplinary or commendatory action, accept citizen complaints and/or inquiries. Maintains records and prepares reports on police activities. Conducts special or confidential investigations requiring advanced operational skills. Assists Police Officers in the interpretation of laws and regulations including the proper reporting of crimes. Commands a group of Police Officers during an emergency. May perform the duties of higher classifications as required during emergencies and/or for training purposes. Must be able to perform all the duties and functions of a police officer.

- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 3 years minimum working as a UC Santa Barbara Police Officer or
- 3 years minimum working as a UC Police Officer or UC Sergeant
- Eligible according to P.O.S.T. and/or completion of basic P.O.S.T. certificate certification and
- Eligible according to P.O.S.T. and/or completion of intermediate P.O.S.T. certificate certification
- Possess a valid California Driver's License
- Ability to successfully complete other training or prerequisites as required by regulation, law, or policy. Successful medical and psychological evaluation required
- Is at least 21 years of age and is a US citizen or has permanent resident alien status and achieves citizenship within three years
- Has no felony conviction or other legal restrictions on the ability to carry firearms or to perform other work responsibilities
- Solid ability to take decisive action based on sound judgment
- Solid ability to operate computers and other relevant or specialized technology
- Thorough knowledge of the use and legal application of firearms and other police weapons, equipment, or tools
- Ability to work rotating shifts in all weather conditions and during extended periods of disaster or civil disorder
- Ability to safely operate motor vehicles
- Extensive experience performing all aspects of police officer functions
- Solid knowledge of law, regulation, and University policy regarding public safety and law enforcement functions

- Writing skills are sufficient to vividly describe people or scenes so that others can visualize them in the form of police reports
- Solid ability to credibly represent the police department in an official capacity
- Demonstrated skill working independently or working as part of a team, stimulating people to effective action to achieve goals and objectives, demonstrating a solid work ethic to peers and subordinates
- Skill in performing a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another of a different nature or with frequent interruptions, distractions, and fluctuating workload
- Skill in listening perceptively to establish rapport and gain the trust of others, or mediate between contending groups or parties
Special Conditions of Employment:
- This is an Internal UC system-wide recruitment giving primary consideration to current, career UC employees. Must be a current UC Police Officer or higher rank sworn classification, non-probationary, and have three (3) or more years of UC Police service. Applicants from other campuses will be required to successfully pass an extensive background investigation, psychological, and medical exams under California P.O.S.T. requirements. P.O.S.T. Basic and Intermediate certificates are required upon appointment. Successful applicants will be required to work rotating shift assignments, weekends, holidays, and mandatory overtime hours. Travel is required for training and mutual aid assistance to other UC campuses and public agencies. Currently, the patrol division works 12-hour shifts and responds to all calls for service. Police sergeants are assigned to supervise law enforcement operations both on the campus and in the Isla Vista community. In addition, sergeants are routinely required to work evenings, nights, and weekends and also work overtime to provide law enforcement support to large special events, concerts, dignitary visits, and a myriad of athletic campus events. Misconduct Disclosure Requirement:
As a condition of employment, the final candidate who accepts a conditional offer of employment will be required to disclose if they have been subject to any final administrative or judicial decisions within the last seven years determining that they committed any misconduct; received notice of any allegation or are currently the subject of any administrative or disciplinary proceedings involving misconduct; have left a position after receiving notice of allegations or while under investigation in an administrative or disciplinary proceeding involving misconduct; or have filed an appeal of a finding of misconduct with a previous employer.
"Misconduct" means any violation of the policies or laws governing conduct at the applicant's previous place of employment, including, but not limited to, violations of policies or laws prohibiting sexual harassment, sexual assault, or other forms of harassment, discrimination, dishonesty, or unethical conduct, as defined by the employer. Job Functions and Percentages of Time:
- 50% Supervision - Works closely with and provides leadership to employees. Provides functional supervision for employees both directly and indirectly under the sergeant's supervision. Provides necessary command in the absence of a ranking officer. Inspects, schedules, and supervises the activities of assigned personnel. Enforces rules, regulations, orders, policies, and procedures with all assigned personnel. Evaluate the performances of employees by conducting performance reviews. Review crime reports for accuracy.
- 25% Administration - Reports promptly, through the chain of command, any violation of University-wide Policies and Administrative Procedures, criminal statutes, or any other misbehavior committed by another employee of the department. Makes immediate recommendations for the relief or suspension from duty of any officer or employee of the department when it is necessary to protect the welfare of the employee, the integrity of the department, or the safety of the campus community as provided for in these regulations. Makes recommendations, as requested, for firing, disciplining, and terminating employees of the department. Responds to citizen complaints.
- 20% Law Enforcement - Works such hours and performs such tasks as are assigned by a ranking officer. Properly executes assigned duties. Prevents crime. Enforces laws. Arrests offenders. Maintains proper public relations. Maintains discipline. Adheres to rules, regulations, orders, departmental procedures, and policies. Initiates police actions when necessary. Promotes University Police morale. Provide supervision in the field at major crime scenes and major traffic accidents, as well as respond to routine calls where officer/s require assistance. Supervises the taking into custody of all suspects to ensure that proper procedures are followed and adhered to with regard to probable cause, arrest, and booking of suspects. Performs related duties as assigned.
- 5% Additional Duties - Provides job training to ensure proper performance by assigned personnel. Makes recommendations for training and officer development. Disseminates orders, policies, and procedures to all assigned personnel. Ensures adherence to these policies and procedures and the proper performance of assigned duties by all assigned personnel. Properly maintains, uses, and operates facilities, materials, supplies, and assigned equipment.
